In January 1824, the royalists attempted to recapture Lima, which forced the Liberator to take his government to Trujillo. The battles of Junín y Ayacucho secured Peru’s independence. After taking office as president, Bolívar set out on his trip through the southern Andes. In Cuzco, he issued a series of “indigenist” decrees and in Upper Peru he drafted the constitution with a lifetime president, also known as the Bolivian Constitution of 1826. |
