Evaluación in-vitro del aceite esencial de Plectranthus amboinicus contra enterobacterias

Growing bacterial resistance is driving the search for natural alternatives with antimicrobial properties, such Plectranthus amboinicus essential oil. This study evaluated its effect against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Salmonella enterica ATCC 14028 was evaluated using agar well diffusion, determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The oil was obtained by steam distillation and subsequently subjected to sensitivity and MIC tests. The control group results showed that oxytetracycline did not inhibit bacterial growth, unlike gentamicin, which produced inhibition zones with average diameters of 20 mm for E. coli and 17.75 mm for Salmonella. In contrast, the 100% essential oil generated average zones of 19.25 mm and 19 mm for E. coli and Salmonella, respectively, demonstrating an effect similar to that of gentamicin. The MIC was determined to be 10% for E. coli and 20% for Salmonella. Chromatography analysis (GC/MS) identified bioactive monoterpene and sesquiterpene compounds associated with the antimicrobial action present in the leaves. These findings confirm the antimicrobial potential of Plectranthus amboinicus essential oil, offering a possible natural alternative for controlling enteric microbial resistance in veterinary medicine.
