Riassunto:The purpose of this study was to teach students the metacognitive strategies to attend the class and improve their performance in learning thermodynamics. 61 students who were enrolled in the subject of Physics at an Ecuadorian university participated in this study. The age of the participants was between 18 and 19 years old. The instructional task was the unit of thermodynamics and the theme presented in this work was the system concept. The pre test and post test consisted of six true-false questions and six development questions. The procedure employed during this research was the following: in the first session, S. Derry’s five steps strategy was taught; strategies were then explained to attend class, and then the pre test was applied. In the next session, the thermodynamic systems class was instructed using questions to encourage metacognition, then the post test was applied. This procedure was followed throughout the thermodynamics unit. The class lasted an hour; the pre test and post test lasted half an hour each. The results confirm that the students improved their performance significantly with the use of metacognitive strategies.
