Description
Summary:The present research aims to characterize social networks -especially Facebook and Twitter- as written communication trends used by 10th grade students of the San Felipe Neri School of Basic Education, located in Riobamba, in the period 2022. A quantitative approach and two levels of basic research were assumed: exploratory (a search for information on the variables of writing and social networks in Ecuadorian students was executed) and descriptive (data and information on the characteristics, properties, aspects or dimensions of the students of the institution under study were collected). Also, the research was field, documentary and had a non-experimental design. The deductive-inductive method was used, the survey technique and its instrument: the questionnaire. The survey was applied to 35 students, who made up the non-probabilistic intentional sample. The results indicated that social networks can have a negative impact on young people's writing. Some ways in which social networks can affect writing are: the use of abbreviations, jargon, neologisms or foreign words. As a result, they are more likely to confuse the discourse of social networks with that of academic writing, which can affect their ability to communicate effectively.
