Summary:Adhesion failures have represented a constant challenge in restorative dentistry. Air abrasion is a mechanical pretreatment technique that creates microroughness of the treated surface and increases the contact area between the adhesive and the dental substrate, improving adhesion. This technique seeks to reduce adhesion failures, especially in dentin. Therefore, this research aimed to analyze the effectiveness of air particle abrasion in the adhesion process in direct and indirect restorations. Methodology: A systematic search for articles was conducted in different databases such as PubMed, ProQuest, and Scopus. The PRISMA methodology was used as a guide to ensure the transparency and quality of the scientific articles in the selection process of the included studies. Results: Twenty-four articles were included, all of which were in vitro studies. Relevant studies on the effectiveness of air abrasion with aluminum oxide were evaluated, and other pretreatments such as etching with phosphoric acid or hydrofluoric acid, laser, grinding with a bur, and plasma were also observed, seeking to identify the best surface treatment to increase bond strength values to dentin. Conclusion: The results suggest that the application of air abrasion with aluminum oxide with appropriate parameters and the use of primers such as MDP significantly improves bond strength to dentin in direct and indirect restorations.
