Summary:Introduction: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the main causes of death worldwide and there is an urgent need to characterize the factors involved in its pathogenesis in a complete way. In this context, attention has been given to the oral microbiota, systemic inflammation, immune cross-reactivity, and their relationship with cardiovascular diseases. Objective: To determine the relationship between the oral microbiota and cardiovascular pathologies (CVD) through a systematic review; and, in this way, to provide relevant information to prevent the development and complications of CVD. Method:Qualitative approach grounded on a systematic review of descriptive type and using a documentary design using online databases such as ScienceDirect, PubMed, LILACS as search instruments employing advanced search strings and inclusion and exclusion criteria to select valid articles for the research. Results: As a result, initially, a total of 320 scientific articles were collected; from them, only eight were selected after a screening process. It was identified that patients with CVD present an altered oral microbiota with higher rates of bacteria such as P. gigivalis and F. Cleatum compared to patients with cardiovascular problems. Conclusions: It was determined that there is a relationship between the oral microbiota and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) since the changes in the oral microbiota (dysbiosis) are a significant promoter of systemic inflammation which is closely related to the production of metabolites involved in the pathogenesis of CVD.
