Description
Summary:ABSTRACT: Albumin plays a crucial role in preventing postoperative complications in elderly patients, as it helps maintain blood volume and osmotic pressure, promotes tissue regeneration, and supports immune function. Studies reveal that patients with nutritional deficiencies are more likely to experience respiratory, circulatory, and infectious complications. Therefore, this study aims to determine the incidence of hypoalbuminemia in the severity of postoperative complications in elder people through a systematic review of scientific literature, which was developed using a qualitative approach through a non-experimental design and an exploratory study. Additionally, the theoretical method employed the analytical-synthetic method, allowing the study of each part’s behavior through critical reading and analysis of each actor’s perspectives, resulting in the identification of hypoalbuminemia as a predisposing factor for postoperative complications such as infection, admission to intensive care units, mechanical ventilation, septic shock, hemorrhages, respiratory, urinary, and endocrine-metabolic complications.
