| Čoahkkáigeassu: | The present research work aimed to improve reading comprehension skills through short stories among six students of Elementary-1. The appropriated methods used were the following: Scientific, Descriptive, Analytic-Synthetic, and Statistical Methods, which assisted to recollect theoretical information, to detail the problem, tabulated, process and analyze the data gather and formulate conclusions. Instruments such as tests and questionnaires were applied. Tests allowed to diagnose students' knowledge of the reading comprehension meanwhile questionnaires where important to identify students' attitudes towards the strategy. Short stories improved significantly student's reading comprehension skills, making them independent readers since they understood the whole text and they were capable to identify the main idea and specific details as well as to get meaning of vocabulary from context. They also turned more active as they were motivated to participate in reading classes. |
