Summary: | Population aging has increased worldwide; In Ecuador it is estimated that 6.5% of the population are older adults. This phenomenon of aging is usually accompanied by the presence of some level of dependence the same that is conditioned by the presence of factors that act as protection and risk in the older adults of zone 7, period January July of 2106 Ecuador. Objective. To determine the protective and risk factors in the functionality of the elderly. Method. Transversal study. The population of older adults is 99 563 of which a sample of 1,146 adults over 65 and older belonging to zone 7 of Ecuador is determined. The Katz index and the Lawton and Brody scale were used to assess the basic activities of daily and instrumental life, for the family functionality the FFsill was applied, with prior informed consent. Results: dependence in the studied population is presented in 39.8% in the instrumental activities of daily life and 3.4% in basic activities of daily living. Among the risk factors associated with the basic activities of daily life of the older adult were the age> 80 years, living without a partner, occupation, and family dysfunction. In the instrumental activities of daily living, the associated risk factors were 75 to 80 years of age, living without a partner and family dysfunction, occupation and the human development bond as protective factors. Conclusions. Functional dependence in the elderly is directly related to age as well as to multiple determinants that act as protectors and risk, so knowing these factors will serve to detect early dependence and improve primary care where Focuses attention from promotion to comprehensive care for the elderly.
