| Summary: | The frequent increase of agro-industrial waste has generated environmental, social and economic problems, so the purpose of this titration work is to evaluate the concentration of secondary metabolites (polyphenols and curcuminoids), as well as to determine the antioxidant activity present in the waste generated in the distillation of the essential oil of Curcuma longa. The research was carried out at the Life Sciences Laboratories of the Salesian Polytechnic University, where the essential oil of C. longa was distilled with the help of a Clevenger distiller, obtaining the hydrolate and the residual cake in which the determination of metabolites and the evaluation of biological activity were carried out. The concentration of curcuminoids in the residue was 51.750 ± 0.06 mg/gram, in the case of polyphenols it was 0.669 ± 0.042 mg/gram. The evaluation of the antioxidant activity by DPPH and ABTS spectrophotometric methods showed IC50 values of 13.3 µg/ml and 7.0 µg/ml, respectively, using 90% ethanol as extraction solvent. The results highlight that in the case of curcuminoids the loss of these in the residue was very low, the opposite happens with polyphenols. In the case of antioxidant activity, we can see that it remains high. The research gives us a residue that still maintains high amounts of curcuminoids that can be used later in various industrial activities. |
