- Description
Babaco (Carica pentagona var. pentagona ) is a natural hybrid resulting from a cross between chamburo (Carica pubescens) and toronche (Carica stipulata). Babaco is originated in the Southern mountains of Ecuador where chamburo and toronche grown traditionally. Babaco production is high in Ecuador due to its high value for industrialization and also export. “Babaco Vascular Wilt” (BVW) or “Fusariosis” caused by Fusarium oxysporum is one of the most important constrains of babaco production in Ecuador. The first and the most important step of BVW management is the avoidance using disease free material. However, disease free material is only successful if the soil is not contamination during commercial production or before. If the disease appears, eradication is the next recommendation discarding diseased plants followed with soil sterilization. This practice is efficient only in the disease incidence is low. Therefore plant protection and the rapeutic means of control appears also important management approaches to implement in commercial production of babaco in Ecuador.
