Insurance activity, strategy and results in Ecuador

Description: The insurance activity in Ecuador has changed considerably since its inception, the present paper aims to track the results achieved by companies focused on general insurance and determine if these respond to a strategy. Official data of the Superintendency of Banks of 27 insurance companies are analyzed. Five major actors were identified that capture over 50% of the market, however not all the big ones achieve the best results. Smaller actors give clear signs of having passed from theory to practice as far as strategy is concerned. Keywords: Insurance, companies, strategy. Mucho ha cambiado la actividad aseguradora en Ecuador desde sus inicios, el presente trabajo se plantea el objetivo de realizar un seguimiento a los resultados alcanzados por las empresas enfocadas en seguros generales y determinar si estos responden a una estrategia. Se analizan datos oficiales de la Superintendencia de Bancos del Ecuador, de 27 compañías de seguros. Se identificaron cinco grandes actores que captan sobre el 50% del mercado, sin embargo no todas las grandes logran los mejores resultados, actores de menor tamaño dan muestras claras de haber pasado de la teoría a la práctica en lo que a estrategia se refiere.
