- Description
On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the University of Cuenca several research works on its institutional history were undertaken. In this article we briefly review the trajectory of the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature in its first period from 1867 to 1897, with the aim of establishing possible causes for its extinction. After a bibliographic and archival analysis three factors are suggested: lack of university autonomy and resources, constant legislative reforms, and the predominance of a positivist and scientist discourse in national and university authorities such as Presidents García Moreno, Eloy Alfaro and Benigno Malo the first Chancellor.
