Description

The Ecuadorian government has adopted a confusing and contradictory stance with regards to refugee rights, granting rights in one sphere and withdrawing rights in the other; assimilating refugees in the social and economic areas but obstructing refugees' claim to official status. These policies carry mixed implications for victims of the Colombian conflict seeking refuge in Ecuador. The intent of this thesis is to unravel the paradox of improved socioeconomic rights of Colombian refugees and retrogressions in their right to claim asylum. The main aim is to uncover the forces that are driving the Ecuadorian government to adopt different legislations and policies for different sets of refugee rights.
