Wetlands are among these-called natural treatment systems where contaminants in the wastewater are removed through by physical, chemical and biological processes naturally. The Tanneries are industries with large volumes of contaminated wastewater. In Cuba the tannery Caibarien Villa Clara of province has not an optimal treatment system for its waste, so that the discharged here of to the surrounding environment is a major problem, especially if we consider into account the presence of sulphides and heavy metals such as chromium. This paper builds on a laboratory scale artificial wetland sub-surface flow for evaluation in the removal of chromium from wastewater industry, obtaining efficiency between 88% and 92%. This is the element of interest in the work, since it is known to harm posed to human health and the environment as this is a persistent element.
Los humedales se incluyen entre los llamados sistemas naturales de tratamiento, donde los contaminantes presentes en las aguas residuales son removidos a trav?s de procesos f?sicos, qu?micos y biol?gicos de forma natural. Las Tener?as son industrias con grandes vol?menes de aguas residuales contaminadas. En Cuba la tener?a de Caibarien de la provincia de Villa Clara no cuenta con un sistema ?ptimo de tratamiento para sus residuales, por lo que el vertido del mismo al medio es un problema de consideraci?n, m?xime si tenemos en cuenta la presencia de sulfuros y metales pesados como el Cromo. En este trabajo se construye a escala de laboratorioun humedal artificial de flujo sub-superficial para su evaluaci?n en la remoci?n de cromo de las aguas residuales de la industria, obteni?ndose una eficiencia entre el 88 % y el 92%. Este es el elemento de mayor inter?s en el trabajo, ya que es conocido el da?o que representa para la salud humana y el medio ambiente al ser este un elemento persistente.
