Description

The widespread use of the technology in everyday life has completely transformed the way that humans behave and interact with each other, this alteration makes itself evident through the almost omnipresence of electronic devices as personal computers or smartphones. The support that personal computers and mobile phones provide to desk bound activities is now indisputable; however, a so recurrent use of other electronic gadgets in day-to-day life is still unusual. Also, it is important to state that the number of electronic devices created to facilitate routinary activities is now countless and expected to grow even more with the time. Besides, there is a rising or more compulsory tendency of all electronic gadgets to have the ability to be connected on the Internet or to other equipment. These devices are each time more complex and armed with all kind of sensors that are able to obtain information to then be transmited over the Internet, this results in the creation of new series of capabilities and applications. Indeed, there is a massive trend to move to multisensors platforms which include several sensing devices aiming extract the most diverse classes of data. Although the idea of having a smartwatch is an appealing concept, it also brings many challenges to the designers and producers that are currently diving into the prospect of developing a device that can be sold to the masses. First, the space that a wrist watch provides is very small. So, there is no so much area to place components such as antennas or sensors. These elements are critical to the operation and connectivity because they allow a smartwatch to be ready to interact with other devices. Besides, the lasting of the battery is crucial, a successful product requires a several days of continuing energy, nobody wants a device that demands to be recharged everyday. Furthermore, there is a compelling necessity and liability that producer and developpers build more secure data devices, the potential information that a smartwatch can carry might be still more sensitive than the generally stored in a tablet or a smartphone. In the same way, smartwatches feature another key aspect which may detonate their massive commercial use, these devices are seen for a big group of potential users mainly as gadgetry destined to link the the functions of a smartphone or a tablet. Speci cally, visual noti cations are displayed on the screen when events as incoming calls, text messages or social network alerts arrive avoiding the necessity to manipulate the smartphone, with this capability the user will prioritize the use of the phone. This function is announced not only as a manner to save time and decrease the level the distraction that mobile phone have brought to everyday life, but also as a method to increase productivity. The work of this master thesis is the following: rst, we provide an current overview from the smartwatch consumer electronic market, the main models and brands are detailed. Also, the main features are displayed. Second, we dive into the technological challenges that face smartwatch to be massevely adopted. Third, we contrast and confront the comercial and scienti c approach to arrive to already available model which can be the intersection for the objetives of the two views of the smartwatch through some study cases. After, we focus on the implementation of anapp for a smartwatch which displays a particular noti cations from a smartphone. Finally, we present the results and the conclusions.
