Description

There exists no precedent in academic studies to date on the connection between Illegal Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) fishing and maritime cocaine trafficking. Government reports and seizure data suggest that the same organized crime groups may be involved in these two illicit international traffic activities and may be using the same maritime routes. Anecdotal evidence and qualitative research indicate that there exists a relationship between IUU fishing activity and cocaine trafficking in the Southeast Pacific Corridor. This study assessed the effect of corruption, trafficking, production and violence on intensity of cocaine trafficking and IUU fishing measured as shark fin landings in the SPC countries of Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Peru. The study found no significant correlations in the proposed variables but has shed light on a section of OC research that needs to be further explored.
