This document presents an insight of the perception and values assigned to the historic building ?La casa de los siete patios? by its residents. This historic building is located within the Historic Centre of Quito, the capital city of Ecuador and it was adapted in 1991 to be used as social housing. It was the first historic building in Ecuador to be adapted for this purpose. This project was part of a wider plan for the conservation of QHC implemented in the 90?s, which looked to transform previous conservation approaches into a more integral and sustainable one. International institutions such as the Inter American Bank of Development (IBD), the UNESCO and the Junta de Andaluc?a supported the local authorities to develop these plans. The achievement of sustainable development was and is until now the main goal in the conservation of QHC. It has been stated that an important factor for efficient heritage conservation is the right understanding of its values; however, establishing the values of heritage assets is a complex issue due to the subjective nature of the topic and also due to the different points of view between different disciplines. Through the years the analysis of these values have been mostly limited to the point of view of experts; however, in most recent times, the opinion of lay people has also been sought after recognizing that their perception has also important implications in conservation projects. Therefore, the aim of this document is to assess the perception of the residents of the historic house ?La casa de los siete patios? by applying a face-to-face survey to its inhabitants and analyse how these perceptions may impact the conservation of the building. The results showed that the residents value the building mainly due to its central location within the city and further responses revealed the existence of issues in the social relationships between the neighbours, which affect the proper conservation of this heritage asset.
