Description

Seaweed farming, value chain upgrading, women empowerment Upgrading is crucial for creating competitive value chains and, in turn, providing a primary source of income for all those women who are engaged in seaweed farming in Zanzibar. Upgrading means to act in response to changing market conditions or new market opportunities, which could include the creation of new products or production processes with added-value and the definition of new market channels. Women play a key role in seaweed farming and therefore are instrumental in upgrading the value chain. Why does the seaweed value chain need to be upgraded? To improve the economy and livelihood of women and to fully exploit the potential and opportunities that seaweed farming has shown in other countries.
