La enfermedad inflamatoria intestinal es definida como un grupo de enfermedades diferentes que tienen como similitud el producir inflamación de tipo crónica del tracto gastrointestinal. Las principales son la colitis ulcerativa y la enfermedad de Crohn. La colitis ulcerativa se encuentra limitada a la mucosa mientras que la enfermedad de Crohn es de afectación variable y extensa pudiendo involucrar cualquier tramo del tracto digestivo. La etiología se desconoce, pero se cree la susceptibilidad genética y los precipitantes ambientales poseen un gran rol en su desarrollo. Las manifestaciones clínicas más frecuentes consisten en tenesmo rectal, deposiciones diarreicas sanguinolentas y dolor abdominal. El diagnóstico es confirmado por estudios colonoscópicos e histológicos sin embargo los estudios de laboratorio e imagen son útiles al evaluar la respuesta al tratamiento. El tratamiento puede ser tanto farmacológico como quirúrgico o la suma de ambos.
Inflammatory bowel disease is defined as a group of different diseases that have the similarity of producing chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The main ones are ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Ulcerative colitis is limited to the mucosa, while Crohn's disease is variable and extensive, and may involve any part of the digestive tract. The etiology is unknown, but genetic susceptibility and environmental precipitants are believed to play a major role in its development. The most frequent clinical manifestations consist of rectal tenesmus, bloody diarrhea stools and abdominal pain. The diagnosis is confirmed by colonoscopic and histological studies, however, laboratory and imaging studies are useful in evaluating the response to treatment. The treatment can be both pharmacological and surgical or both.
