Introducción: La investigación siempre ha existido extracurricularmente en pregrado en el contexto universitario, pero en los últimos años ha tenido una gran relevancia en los estudiantes de medicina. Objetivo: Analizar el nivel de interés, conocimientos, recursos y limitaciones de los estudiantes de la carrera de medicina en el área de Investigación Científica. Metodología: El presente estudio tiene un diseño descriptivo, retrospectivo con una muestra estratificada por ciclo (N=304) correspondiente a estudiantes de los últimos cinco ciclos de la carrera de medicina a los que se les aplicó una encuesta dividida en por siete ítems diseñados específicamente para el estudio respecto a interés, conocimientos, recursos y limitaciones en los estudiantes de la Carrera de Medicina en Investigación Científica. Resultados: El 78.95% (n=240) de la población estudiada tiene la capacidad de deducir que un tema de investigación es relevante, un 61.51% (n=187) lee continuamente publicaciones en la web, pero un 45.39% (n=138) tiene problemas para definir el diseño experimental de un trabajo de investigación, un 82.84% (n=251) afirman que los egresados no poseen formación para investigar, un 66.78% conoce que existe una plataforma de biblioteca virtual de la Universidad Católica de Santiago de Guayaquil (UCSG), y un 1.32% (n=4) han publicado en revistas indexadas. Conclusión: Es de vital relevancia la participación de los estudiantes de pregrado en los proyectos de investigación de la UCSG así como formar grupos que les permita mejorar sus conocimientos y actitudes hacia la investigación científica.
Introduction: Research has always existed in the context of the university, but in recent years it has had a great relevance in medical students. Objective: To analyze the level of interest, knowledge, resources and limitations of the students of the medical career in the area of Scientific Research. Methodology: The present study has a descriptive, retrospective design with a sample stratified by cycle (N = 304) that correspond to the students of the last five cycles of the medical career to which a survey was applied divided into seven items specifically designed for the study regarding interests, knowledge, resources and limitations among students of the medical career in terms of scientific research. Results: 78.95% (n = 240) of the study population has the capacity to deduce that a research topic is relevant, a 61.51% (n = 187) continuously read publications on the web, but 45.39% (n = 138) have a problem to define the experimental design of a research paper, 82.84% (n = 251) affirm that graduates do not have training to investigate, 66.78% know that there is a virtual library platform of the Catholic University of Santiago de Guayaquil (UCSG), and 1.32% (n = 4) have published in indexed peer reviewed journals. Conclusions: The participation of undergraduate students in UCSG research projects is of vital importance as well as forming groups that allow them to improve their knowledge and attitudes towards scientific research.
