This research is a descriptive study of the Brazilian geopolitical interests with reference to the promotion of a regional security and defense regime, within the institutional framework of UNASUR. In this context, at first, the geographical and historical elements are collected to characterize the Brazilian geopolitical interests regarding South America; likewise, through conceptual and material elements, this investigation pretends to analyze and contrast the contents of the Brazilian speech about its current security and defense interests with the principal regional objectives proposed by the sine of the South American Defense Council. Finally, by using the postulates from the Realist and Neorealist School of the International Relations, the aim of this investigation is to examine the role played by Brazil nowadays, and its future opportunities for the establishment of a formal system of security and defense in the subcontinent.
La presente pieza de investigación se constituye como un estudio descriptivo de los intereses geopolíticos de Brasil con referencia a la promoción de un régimen de seguridad y defensa regional dentro del marco institucional de UNASUR. En ese contexto, en un primer momento, se recogen elementos geográficos e históricos para caracterizar la geopolítica brasileña con respecto a Suramérica. Así también se realiza un diagnóstico sobre los actuales intereses de seguridad y defensa nacional del Brasil y se analiza su símil con los objetivos regionales pregonados en el seno del Consejo de Defensa Suramericano a partir del análisis del contenido discursivo brasileño contemplando tanto elementos conceptuales como materiales. Finalmente, se lleva a cabo una aproximación teórica tomando como base postulados de las escuelas: realista y neorrealista de las Relaciones Internacionales con el objetivo de examinar el rol que cumple al momento Brasil y sus oportunidades a futuro para la instauración de un régimen formal de seguridad y defensa en el subcontinente.
