The purpose of this essay is to explore the habits/customs that upper middle class women from Quito had during the first half of the twentieth century. This will be accomplished through the testimony of four informants, three females and one male, so it will be developed from both a feminine and masculine points of view. Personal interviews were used as the method to compile information. The same method was used with every informant: previous appointments, two-hour sessions in which the author brought out a topic and the interviewee related all the pertinent remembrances. Well established and disciplined procedures were needed since it was easy to get away from the topic of the day, taking into consideration so much life and wisdom. This project is important because a great deal of the information gathered is not found in books. Interviews are subjective as well as the memories but the feelings of the women, knowing the place to which they belong and remembering the behavior that was expected from them, constitute a body of invaluable experiences and information. This information could be subject to different readings and interpretations, however, the author chose to show the facts and let the readers draw their own conclusions.
Este ensayo explora las costumbres de la mujer quiteña de clase media alta en la primera mitad del siglo XX a través del testimonio de cuatro informantes, enfocados no solo desde el punto de vista femenino, sino también desde el masculino. Se trata de contar la vida cotidiana y privada de las mujeres de una manera íntima y con una versión de primera mano. Para recopilar información se usó el método de la entrevista. Con cada uno de los entrevistados se siguió la misma metodología: citas realizadas con anterioridad, sesiones de dos horas en los que la autora menciona un tema y el entrevistado narra todo lo que recuerda sobre ese tópico. Con tanta vida y sabiduría acumulada es fácil desviarse del tema del día por lo que se requirió de un ejercicio de disciplina y orden pre establecido. Esta investigación es importante porque mucha de la información recopilada no se encuentra en los libros. Las entrevistas son subjetivas como lo es la memoria pero el sentir de las mujeres, el conocer el lugar al que pertenecen, el rememorar el comportamiento que de ellas se esperaba, de primera fuente, son invalorables. Esta información podría estar sujeta a diferentes lecturas e interpretaciones pero la autora decidió simplemente mostrar los hechos y dejar que sea el lector quien saque sus propias conclusiones.
