Mortalidad materna : aplicación del "método de las hermanas" en el Valle de Tumbaco en el tercer trimestre del año 2010

This investigation applied the “indirect sisterhood method” for the estimation of maternal mortality in the region of the Tumbaco valley. The purpose of the research, besides obtaining an estimation of the maternal mortality of the area, was to test the strengths and weaknesses of this method, with the intention of formulating corrections and recommendations that would allow application of the method in a larger population scale. The study was conducted during october – december of 2010, in all the areas that compromise the “Area de Salud Nº14”, a subdivision of the Pichincha Province Health Direction of the Ministry of Public Health. The “indirect sisterhood method” developed by Graham et al (4) was applied following the guidelines of the WHO (12) to a sample of 384 women with ages 15-49.
Esta investigación aplicó el “método de las hermanas” para la estimación de la mortalidad materna en el área del valle de Tumbaco. El propósito, aparte de obtener una estimación de la mortalidad materna en la zona, fue probar las fortalezas y debilidades de este método, con la intención de formular cambios y recomendaciones que permitan aplicar el método en una mayor escala poblacional. El estudio se realizó durante octubre a diciembre del 2010, en las parroquias que comprometen el Área de Salud Nº14. Se aplicó el “método indirecto de las hermanas” desarrollado por Graham et al (4) y siguiendo las recomendaciones de la OMS (12) a una muestra aleatoria de 384 mujeres en edad fértil.
