Description

The literary figure known as ekphrasis is the one through which visual art is represented in poetry, traditionally this resource is based on description. The following essay seeks to bring to light Hispano-American ekphrastic poetry produced in the seventeenth century by three contemporary poets: Antonio Bastidas, Jacinto de Evia and Hernando Domínguez Camargo, which has an important visual charge that, however is not only descriptive. Ekphrasis in this particular context develops as part of a creole mirabilia that establishes a route to see, which is why it highlights the use of resources of a baroque aesthetic that, at the same time, responds to a persuasive and eloquent rhetoric. Besides, this is a type of poetry that, through its imagetexts (mixed product that arises in poetry after the communication between the visual object and the textual plane), celebrates its production space: the American territory, and even sometimes dares to question the hegemonic relations of colonial power. This ekphrasis, lightly studied previously, is an instrument that condenses a creative visual-literary aesthetic, at the same time that it functions as a part of a critical project of socio-political implications.
La figura literaria conocida como ékfrasis es aquella mediante la cual el arte visual se representa en la poesía, tradicionalmente este recurso se basa en la descripción. El siguiente trabajo busca sacar a la luz la poesía ekfrástica hispanoamericana producida en el siglo XVII por parte de tres poetas contemporáneos: Antonio Bastidas, Jacinto de Evia y Hernando Domínguez Camargo, la cual tiene una importante carga visual que, sin embargo, no es solamente descriptiva. La ékfrasis en este contexto particular se desarrolla como parte de una mirabilia criolla que establece una ruta para ver, por lo que se destaca el uso de recursos propios de una estética barroca que a su vez responde a una retórica persuasiva y elocuente. Pero además es una poesía que, a través de sus imagentextos (producto mixto que surge en la poesía tras la comunicación entre objeto visual y plano textual), celebra a su espacio de producción: el territorio americano, e incluso a veces se atreve a cuestionar las relaciones hegemónicas del poder colonial. Esta ékfrasis, poco estudiada anteriormente, es un instrumento que condensa una creativa estética visual-literaria, a la vez que funciona como parte de un proyecto crítico de implicaciones socio-políticas.
