The economic capital and the religion are variables with a wide context of entailment from immemorial time and have been product of several theories about the causes and consequences of the interaction between them. In this thesis occurs an analysis of the circumstances that surround Ecuador and its population alongside the religious conversion phenomenon, which has been originated from the traditional and ingrained Catholicism through the Protestantism that is thriving among the Ecuadorians. Brilliant authors in this field are reviewed and their findings in other Latin-American countries, such as Colombia, Brazil, and Chile, which possess similar cultural, social and historical characteristics as the Ecuador, but whose economic conditions are far from. Nevertheless, the will be useful as samples to lucubrate potential religious sceneries of the nation against a plausible economic capital growth. The core purpose of the investigation is to know the motivation of the habitants to change their religion by personal level probing trough surveys and interviews from converts’ testimonies. Later, that information and the economic typology data will be homologate and the outcomes will be compared to probe or deny the core hypothesis about if the Ecuador is enduring a religious conversion as a consequence of its economic development.
El capital económico y la religión son variables con un amplio contexto de vinculación desde tiempos inmemoriales y ha sido producto de varias teorías sobre las causas y consecuencias de la interacción entre ellas. Es esta tesis se produce un análisis de las circunstancias que rodean al Ecuador y su población frente al fenómeno de la conversión religiosa que se ha originado desde el tradicional y arraigado Catolicismo hacia el protestantismo que se encuentra en auge entre los ecuatorianos. Se revisa autores destacados en el ámbito y se menciona sus hallazgos en otros países de América Latina, como Colombia, Brasil y Chile que poseen similares características culturales, históricas, y sociales a las que Ecuador mantiene, pero distan en las condiciones económicas. No obstante, servirán como muestra para elucubrar posibles escenarios religiosos del país frente a un potencial desarrollo del capital económico. El núcleo de la investigación es conocer la motivación de los habitantes para cambiar de religión mediante un sondeo a nivel personal a través de encuestas y entrevistan de fieles testimonios de conversos. Posteriormente se homologara los datos de las tipologías económicas que disfrutan y se compararan los resultados para constatar o falsar la hipótesis central sobre si el Ecuador padece de conversión religiosa como producto de su avance económico.
