Description

The anterior region of the neck is a frequent anatomical zone where pathology is found in the general population. It usually presents as a nodule which can be of recent growth, a slow growing mass, dysphagia or dysphonia. Because of the location of this anatomical region, the ultrasound (US) has become on the evaluation test of choice, given that it is innocuous, its easy accessibility and its great value for detecting lesions of very few millimeters. The popular use of the US for the analysis of the thyroid gland has allowed us to discover certain morphologic patterns that suggest malignancy of a thyroid nodule. Nowadays the utilization of the Doppler has enabled us to study other parameters for the diagnosis of malignancy of a thyroid nodule, which are flow patterns, resistance index and pulsatility index.
La región anterior del cuello es una zona anatómica con frecuente afectación patológica en la población general, la cual habitualmente manifiesta crecimientos nodulares o abultamientos en esta región, así como disfagia y disfonía. Por la localización de esta área anatómica, el ultrasonido se ha convertido en el método diagnóstico de elección por su fácil accesibilidad, inocuidad y su gran utilidad para identificar lesiones de pocos milímetros; lo que ha permitido que se descubran ciertos patrones morfológicos que son factores de riesgo de malignidad. Actualmente la utilización del Doppler ha permitido que se estudien nuevos parámetros para el diagnóstico de malignidad en nódulos tiroideos tales como patrones de flujo, medición de índices de resistencia y pulsatilidad
