Lateral bracing systems for seismic-resistant building structures are of great importance for a country like Ecuador due to its seismic vulnerability, creating the need of sheer walls that partially absorb the forces generated by an earthquake. This thesis covers an analytical and comparative study between two sheer wall systems for seismic-resistant buildings: the well-known reinforced concrete sheer walls and a newly developed technology generated from forming sheer walls with steel plates. Three structural models were created to cover the behavior of each sheer wall system, with structural models of four, seven and twelve stories high.
Los sistemas de arriostramiento para estructuras de edificios sismo-resistentes resultan de vital importancia para Ecuador considerando la vulnerabilidad sísmica de este País. Esta vulnerabilidad crea la necesidad de integrar muros de corte en los esqueletos estructurales de los edificios que resistan gran parte de las fuerzas provenientes de los terremotos.
