Description

This study links social and ecological aspects of whitefish fishery on San Cristobal island. Shifting baselines are used as a methodological approach to evaluate changes in the marine ecosystem state and its species by using anecdotal information and perceptions. Galapagos has a dynamic and complex socio-ecological system, the home of the fisherman is closely related to the marine ecosystem, and has created trough time linkages and interactions between these two elements of the system. Through quantitative and qualitative information generated by surveys to three generations of fishermen and semi-structured interviews with representative fisheries stakeholders, we could evaluate past changes in the abundance of whitefish fishery, using the bacalao (Mycteroperca olfax) as indicator specie for its historical representation in fisheries.
La pesca es una actividad que se desarrolla en el mundo desde hace miles de años. En los inicios de esta actividad, comunidades costeras usaron los recursos marinos para su subsistencia, y su explotación estuvo marcada por una pesca artesanal donde la presión por estos recursos era sostenible (Jackson et al., 2001; Lotze y Worm, 2009). Con el crecimiento poblacional, la industrialización, desarrollo tecnológico y otras actividades que han marcado el desarrollo humano en todo el mundo, los ecosistemas marinos se han visto afectados por su continua degradación (Jackson et al., 2001; Pauly et al., 2002; Jacquet y Pauly, 2007).
