The intervention area is located north of Quito, in the parishes of Pomasqui and San Antonio de Pichincha. This area is characterized by its great expansion in recent years and as a result its high population growth. Much of this growth has been residential, making this area into a “bedroom community”. Another important feature of the area is that it has a dry microclimate that is created in the valley between two important mountains in this area. The Monjas River passes through the middle of the valley, which is important for the area because of the diversity of flora that is created around the river, but it is disregarded because of the high levels of pollution that the river has. The Convention Center Mitad del Mundo is one of the many projects that resulted from a several studies in the area that help with the link between the river and the most important avenue at this moment, Avenida Cordoba Galarza. The piece of land where the project takes place is located where nowadays CEMEXPO is, Quito’s Exhibition Center. Its location is important in the area because it is situated in the middle of the towns of San Antonio and Pomasqui. The project intends to link the community with the green natural axis that currently exists around the river, also bringing foreigners and people of the city through its diverse program as it has a theater, a hotel, a convention center and areas of multiple uses.
La zona a intervenir se encuentra al norte de Quito, en las parroquias de Pomasqui y San Antonio de Pichincha. Esta zona se caracteriza por su gran expansión en los últimos años y gracias a ello su gran crecimiento poblacional. Gran parte de este crecimiento se ha dado en carácter residencial, lo que convierte a esta zona en una ciudad dormitorio. Otra característica importante de la zona es que tiene un microclima árido que se crea en el valle que existe entre 2 montañas importantes. Por la mitad de este valle pasa el Río Monjas, importante en la zona por la diversidad de flora que se crea alrededor de este pero que a la vez está descuidado por los altos niveles de contaminación que presenta. El Centro de Convenciones Mitad del Mundo es uno de los muchos proyectos que derivaron de un gran estudio de la zona que ayuda con la vinculación entre el río y la vía más importante al momento, la Avenida Córdoba Galarza. El terreno se ubica donde actualmente está CEMEXPO, el Centro de Exposiciones Quito, ya que su ubicación es importante en la zona al encontrarse en la mitad de los poblados de San Antonio y Pomasqui. Con el proyecto se intenta vincular a la comunidad con el eje natural verde que actualmente existe, además de traer a extranjeros y gente de la ciudad a través de su diverso programa como es un teatro, un hotel, un centro de convenciones y espacios de uso múltiple.
