Domestic violence has been researched extensively throught the years. But this investigation is focused on finding factors that hepled ecuadorean women of low socioeconomic statuses to leave their violent relationships. Eight women participated in this study, all of which had left the relationships more than two years ago and had been in those relationships between four and 27 years. The way the reasearch was done was by interviews, from which the author of the study found six themes that helped the women leave their, not only physically but emotionally and sexually violent relationships. The essential factors had to do with their children, their families and their own personal love. Their work, as well as people close to them were also important factors that helped them take the final decision. To the authors’ surprise, religion was the factor that least affected the womens’ decision to leave their couple. This investigation opens doors to future studies on the subject of domestic violence. The author also hopes that it is beneficial and useful for organizations and centers that work with women, and also to be implemented in antidomestic- violence campaigns.
El tema de la violencia doméstica ha sido estudiado extensamente, pero esta investigación se enfocó en identificar los factores que tienen las mujeres ecuatorianas de escasos recursos para salir de relaciones de pareja violenta. Ocho mujeres fueron participes del estudio, todas habían salido de la relación hace más de dos y sus relaciones habían durado entre cuatro a 27 años. La forma en la que se procedió a encontrar los resultados fue mediante entrevistas a profundidad. Se encontraron seis factores que ayudaron a que las mujeres saliesen definitivamente de los hogares en los que sufrían agresiones, no solo físicas, sino que emocionales y sexuales también. Los factores esenciales que las ayudaron fueron: sus hijos, su amor propio y la ayuda que recibieron de parte de sus familiares más cercanos. Su trabajo y personas externas también las ayudaron a considerar dejar a su pareja. La religión, a diferencia de lo que creía la autora, fue un tema casi imperceptible. Esta investigación abre una puerta para futuros estudios en el área de violencia doméstica. Además, se espera que pueda ser utilizado en centros de ayuda para mujeres, también para campañas y para mujeres individuales que pasan por situaciones similares o conocen a alguien que se encuentre en una situación similar a las expuestas.
