La fisioterapia en pacientes críticos que son ingresados en la Unidad de Cuidados intensivos, ya sea por alguna enfermedad aguda accidente, cirugía o cualquier otra causa que le lleva a una fase de inestabilidad desde el punto de vista médico le coloca al paciente en riesgo vital, a veces muy elevado. Es una obligación del fisioterapeuta, como lo es de todo personal del Salud, conocer las actuaciones a llevar a cabo para ello debe tener correcto conocimiento, tanto de la etiología y desarrollo de esas situaciones críticas, como de las normas de actuación frente a ellas. El paciente estará ubicado muy probablemente en unidades especiales: UCI, incubadora, reanimación, donde está recibiendo tratamiento médico-quirúrgico altamente especializado. El primer objetivo que se busca es la elaboración de una guía de Terapia Física para salvaguarda su vida, dejando para más tarde aspectos, que aunque importantes serán abordados en una fase posterior, así evitar futuras complicaciones y el riesgo de Salud del paciente hospitalizado.
