Description

The results of a Master thesis research carried out with students, teachers, and university authorities of Early Childhood Education (ECE) during the academic year 2017- 2018 at a public university in Ecuador, the National University of Education (UNAE) are presented. The aim is to gain understanding about their perceptions on the construction of subjectivities, with a gender perspective, that influence their career choice. The research has a qualitative approach that allowed to develop a descriptive and interpretive content analysis through interviews, micro-stories, and a focus group, with a question- naire guide, and the use of the qualitative analysis software N-Vivo. The software allowed to generate categories of analysis based on the collected data, with a gender perspective. As result of the analysis, the existence of sociocultural gender stereotypes that influenced on career choice, educational, social, economic, and cultural inequalities of the students who selected ECE have become visible. For this reason, it is concluded the need to rethink the scope of teacher training in early childhood in relation to child pedagogy, education and care, with a gender perspective, and accompanied by inclusive and equitable university institutional policies that address diversity.
