Description

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is one of the flexible mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol and it has two objectives: greenhouse gas emission reductions in developed countries and contribution to sustainable development in developing countries. This study analyses the CDM project?s contribution to Sustainable development for the CDM wind farm project located in Bangui Bay, Republic of the Philippines. The role of Sustainable development within the CDM has been questioned by many scholars since the creation of the scheme. The question of how far a CDM project contributes to Sustainable development for local communities has not yet been sufficiently researched. In addition the concept of Sustainable development has shortcomings in its definition, since it has been questioned by scholars in past publications. After the analysis of these empirical information two main findings were obtained: (i) it is found that the contribution of the CDM project to Sustainable development does not reach down to the local communities (ii) and also the need of better participation processes in the design of the project. Therefore, this is why, within the CDM structure, it is necessary to better involve, by the means of participatory processes, local inhabitants in the definition of a Sustainable development adapted to the respective local conditions.
