Description

The objective of this research was to define the most appropriate technique to determine the vegetative cover and land use in the Pacoche Wildlife Refuge and in the canton Flavio Alfaro of the province of Manabi, Ecuador. Employment is supervised classification, principal component analysis and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The models were calibrated by means of intentional sampling stratified and crossed with data taken in the field and the production systems of the Space Institute Ecuadorian and ecosystems of the Ministry of Environment of Ecuador, coupled with field control. At the level of results, with the supervised classification was able to obtain five categories of coverage and uses, three non-plant and two plants. Using principal components analysis, were obtained the same categories, although the spatialisation proved to be more accurate than the previous one, facilitating the observation of the elements. With the NDVI is obtained the same amount of categories; however, the latter threw three plant and two non-plant classes, which allows us to conclude that the most suitable technique to determine the vegetative cover and land use is the NDVI, whose interpretation must be supported by principal components analysis.
