Entre ángeles y demonios: análisis musical e interpretativo de la incidencia del formato sinfónico en la banda Épica aplicado a un recital final

Symphonic metal is a subgenre of heavy metal, it is born from the combination of characteristic elements of this genre, such as format (drums, bass, distorted guitars), with certain essential colors of classical music such as wind, string and percussion section and lyrical voices. It is the mix of these elements that define the format of this genre. Epica is a clear example of the potentiality that a symphonic metal band can have, capturing in its songs both elements of symphonic music and the resources commonly found in a metal band. This investigation will focus on this band in order to demonstrate the impact of symphonic music in metal. Part of the analysis, will be based on the relevance of Epica for this genre. Four songs of this band will be chosen to submit them to a musical and interpretative analysis. Finally, the same repertoire of Epica will be interpreted in a final recital, applying what was analyzed into new arrangements. The new arrangements will incorporate the analyzed musical elements into new parts of the song, which will have a new featured instrument, in this case, the guitar. New melodic lines will be elaborated for a reduced symphonic format with the means of highlighting and applying its place in this genre. The line of research of this work is performance. The final product will be a recital and a shed of light of knowledge, which will contribute to the existing database in Ecuador about symphonic metal.
El metal sinfónico es un subgénero del heavy metal que nace de la combinación de elementos característicos de este género, como su formato (batería, bajo, guitarras distorsionadas), combinados con ciertos colores esenciales de la música clásica, como sección de cuerdas, vientos, voces líricas y percusión. Es de dicha composición lo que define el formato de este género. Epica es un ejemplo claro del potencial de una banda de metal sinfónico, plasmando en sus canciones tanto los elementos de la música sinfónica como los recursos que comúnmente se encuentran en una banda de metal. Esta investigación se enfocará en esta banda con el fin de evidenciar la incidencia de la música sinfónica en el metal. Se hará un análisis de su música con base en la trascendencia de Epica en el género. Se escogerán cuatro temas de dicha banda para someterlos a un análisis musical e interpretativo. Finalmente, se seleccionará un repertorio de la banda Epica, para interpretarlo en un recital final aplicando lo analizado en los arreglos de los cuatro temas seleccionados. Estos arreglos presentarán elementos musicales incorporados en nuevas secciones, que tendrán como nuevo instrumento protagonista a la guitarra eléctrica. Se elaborarán nuevas líneas melódicas para el formato sinfónico reducido con el fin de resaltar y aplicar la incidencia que existe dentro de este género. La línea de investigación de este trabajo es performance. El producto final será un recital y brindar una luz de conocimiento, que aportará a la base de datos existente en el Ecuador acerca del metal sinfónico.
