Architecture has long been pointing the need to inhabit infrastructures. Specifically, the metabolism movement was the pioneer in the development of this concept by creating huge structures that where called megastructures. The idea of this type of structures is that they would generate cities contained in them, so that the spaces and lands in cities and states could be used in a better way. Unfortunately, few cities had apply the metabolism’s ideas: rising problems such as inadequate soil occupation, big structures made for just one purpose and the improper use of this structures that can and should be used in a much better way, are resulting in bigger problems for growing cities getting that are getting out of control. Restructuring Manta`s Coastal border will reuse the urban infrastructure to provide to the city with better spaces, new uses and programs. Also, the new location of the port in this city and the development of the cruise ship terminal is an evidence of how infrastructure could be used in many ways, generating new spaces that in this moment doesn’t exist and that the city of Manta definitely needs.
El habitar infraestructuras urbanas es una práctica que se ha dado en la arquitectura desde hace muchos años. Los metabolistas desarrollaron este concepto al crear grandes estructuras, llamadas megaestructuras, y generar ciudades contenidas dentro de estas. Los metabolistas desarrollaron este concepto al crear grandes estructuras, llamadas megaestructuras, y generar ciudades contenidas dentro de estas. Lamentablemente, muy pocas ciudades han logrado aplicar las iniciativas metabolistas; cada vez crecen los problemas relacionados con la mala ocupación del suelo, inmensas estructuras construidas con un solo propósito y el desperdicio en general de estas grandes construcciones que pueden y deberían ser utilizadas de mejor manera. De ahí la importancia de desarrollar una reestructuración del borde costero de Manta, como una propuesta arquitectónica para la reutilización de estas infraestructuras urbanas, proporcionando a la ciudad mejores espacios, nuevos usos y programas. Esto, conjuntamente con la propuesta de la reubicación del puerto de carga y el terminal para cruceros, es una evidencia de cómo la infraestructura puede ser utilizada de diversas maneras, con mayores propósitos y generando espacios que no existen en la actualidad y son necesarios en la ciudad de Manta.
