Cultivo in vitro del mortiño (Vaccinium floribundum Kunth)

Description: Mortiño (Vaccinium floribundum Kunth) is a fruit that grows in the high altitude mountain regions of Ecuador. It has the potential to be commercialized and a niche in the market could be created, but it only grows in the wild. Therefore, it would be beneficial to optimize the propagation of this plant. In this study, mortiño in vitro cultures were established from seeds and by axillary bud growth. Seeds germinated after 2 weeks in a basal medium, modified Woody Plant Medium (Lloyd & McCown, 1980), without hormones.
El mortiño (Vaccinium floribundum Kunth) es una baya que crece en los páramos de Ecuador. Podría comercializarse y crearse un nicho en el mercado para ésta, pero solo crece de forma silvestre, por lo que sería beneficioso optimizar la propagación de esta planta. En este trabajo se estableció el cultivo in vitro por germinación de semillas y por brotación de yemas axilares. Las semillas germinaron después de 2 semanas en un medio basal sin hormonas, Woody Plant Medium (Lloyd & McCown, 1980) modificado.
